At Home Teeth Whitening Facts

At home kits do use a bleach to whiten teeth. Most in office treatments will use Hydrogen Peroxide (which is a bleach) as it is faster acting and time is of the essence. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down faster than Carbamide Peroxide, which is what we use in our home treatment kits. Carbamide Peroxide has about a third of the strength of Hydrogen Peroxide, which is why a stronger concentration is needed. A 5% Hydrogen Peroxide is equivalent to a 15% of Carbamide Peroxide. You will be receiving a 35% Carbamide Peroxide with your kit which is more than enough to whiten your teeth!

Teeth whitening results vary from person to person depending on many factors. Extrinsic stains (outside on surface) are easier to remove whereas instrinsic (inside tooth) are more difficult. Some intrinsic stains come from the dentin which is the layer of tooth beneath the enamel. This layer by nature is more yellow and will be more difficult to whiten. Intrinsic stains that are still in the enamel are more readily whitened.

Your kit will come with a shade guide which will help you to track your teeth whitening progress. A color should be matched to your teeth color prior to beginning your at home treatment.

While whitening can often lighten your tooth color by nine or more shades, most people who bleach will see a change of two to seven shades. Maintenance is required to keep your teeth looking their whitest! Practice good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing. Avoid foods and beverages that might stain your teeth like coffee, tea, berries, etc. Use your whitening gel on a regular basis for upkeep.

Teeth whitening can often cause a temporary increase in sensitivity. Most often it is temperature related but teeth can also become sensitive to pressure and touch. This is why a remineralization gel is included in your kit. This gel should be used immediately after your home bleaching treatment to remineralize and strengthen the enamel. This will significantly cut back on sensitivity. We also recommend using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth during your initial two weeks of your home whitening treatment.

Gum irritation may also be experienced as the bleaching products may be caustic to the delicate gingival tissue. This should subside once your whitening treatment has been completed or stopped.

Pregnant and nursing women are advised not to use teeth whitening products as it is uncertain what the impact to an unborn child would be if the bleach were to be swallowed.
